1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE

Built from 1961 - 1972, the Mercedes-Benz W111 coupés remain among the marque’s most distinctive and elegant models. Sharing mechanicals with the W111 “fintail” sedans, the coupés introduced a more mature fin-less style.

The 280 SE introduced in 1968 was the final six-cylinder version of the series, more agile than American luxury coupés and with negligible direct European competition. The 280 SE’s badge signified an M130 2.8 litre inline-six engine under the hood. Its seven main bearings provide for notably smooth running. Equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the M130 was rated at 180 horsepower and was also used in the 280 SL sports car.

The W111 Mercedes-Benz models featured independent suspension, including at the rear by swing axles and a central, horizontal “compensating” coil spring.
