Named for Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino the vaunted Ferrari Dino was a total, innovative break with tradition, it was proportionately smaller and more agile than any other street going Ferrari of the time and is today the cornerstone of any collectable classic collection.
Recognising the potential for small displacement, high-technology six-cylinder engines, Alfredo Ferrari’s original vision is more relevant today than ever before. “Dino,” a trained engineer, passed tragically at the age of 24, just as he began making a case for performance-oriented six-cylinder engines for the brand’s racing efforts.
The small V6 eventually made it into production as a 1,987 cubic centimetre unit, which allowed Ferrari to qualify for Formula Two racing. For 1969, the Dino’s V6 was enlarged to 2,418 cubic centimetres, giving the 206 its new 246 nomenclature and cementing the car as a hallmark within the storied history of one of the greatest automakers.
It was a success almost immediately at its public launch to becoming one of the most beautiful and collectable sports cars of all time known for its throaty exhaust note, a chassis that feels nothing short of alive beneath you and for having one of Ferrari’s most driver focused cockpits ever designed.
John Bolster of Autosport Magazine said “it has just about the highest cornering power of anything that I have driven. It bears no relationship to a normal road car, being comparable only with racing cars but it is also a thoroughly practical two-seater touring car for shopping and going to the office".
CTS has the very rare and exclusive opportunity to bring this stunning example to market. Available on our showroom floor is a factory RHD 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT presented in its original colour combination of Azzurro Blue over Blu interior trim.
Sold and delivered new through Maranello Concessionaires UK in April 1971 to a Mr Easterman of London, this Dino was privately owned before finding its way to Australia in
1983 where it then was acquired by its last and current custodian who has kept it under their ownership for the past 39 years.
In 2011, the current owner had commissioned a Sydney based Ferrari specialist to complete a nut and bolt restoration to a concours standard.
Over the next 5 years the Ferrari was subjected to a restoration of the highest level. Its body and chassis were taken back to bare metal, it was brought back to its original colour combination, and its engine and drivetrain were completely rebuilt.
In 2016 it was showcased down at Melbourne classic car show Motorclassica where it won “1st in class – Modern Classic: Sports & Performance (less than 3 litres)”.
Today the car presents no different to when it was first refurbished, the owner has kept it in dry storage, taking it out once a month for a good drive through twisting country roads and it has been regularly service and maintained with a Sydney based Ferrari specialist.
This sale is accompanied with historical documentation including build sheets and service receipts supplied by Maranello’s in-house archivist, photos documenting the restoration, toolkit and spare wheel.
Few cars truly warrant the tag line ‘Most Beautiful in the World’ and of those, only a handful are as rewarding to drive as they are to look at. The immortal Ferrari Dino is one such classic.
In such a rare and sought after colour combination, don’t miss this opportunity to own a turn-key restored iconic classic Ferrari.
