It was in the early 80’s Porsche let its engineers loose to develop an all new all-wheel-drive system and it turned out to be so good that the 911 sports coupe won Paris Dakar against a swathe of off-road vehicles and ever since Porsche learned plenty along the way resulting in its latest all- wheel-drive models being absolutely brilliant in all dynamic functions.

The Type 997 was an all-new inspiring generation of the 911, with design cues resembling the early 993 with its once again circular headlights and the ‘S’ specification was given an all new meaty naturally aspirated 3.8 litre that produced 261kW and 400Nm of torque. With the new motor featuring a sophisticated AWD system in a Carrera 4 S, the 911 achieved 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

The 4S also featured the wider rear guards, larger rolling stock, larger air-intake grills and a host of tech normally reserved for the 911 Turbo making it top of its class for the Carrera model line.

For the 997 Targa, Porsche stuck to the formula it created for the 993 and went on to refine for the 996.

A retractable glass roof complemented by an electrically retracting sunshade that made the Targa feel just like the standard Coupé, while the glass section slid back beneath the rear window. A more practical option, the rear window also opened and closed allowing more luggage space.
