It’s hard for us to imagine a time before the internal combustion engine. In truth, we would have to travel back to the 19th Century, where electric vehicles (EV’s) outsold gasoline cars ten to one and dominated the roads and dealerships.

In the 1920’s, the improvement in road infrastructure required vehicles with longer range, so with worldwide petroleum discoveries making gas-powered cars cheaper to operate, the convenience the internal combustion offered was undeniable. The focus from EV’s simply shifted in favour of the alternative, and that is history.

It was not until the 2000’s, the time of the global economic crisis, that the EV brought renewed interest and in independence once again. The vast technology boom paved the way to understanding how battery technology could be applied to commercial applications once again. Today, led by Silicon Valley based Tesla Motors, every global automotive player has an electric vehicle program that is focussed on producing sustainable EV’s and hybrid vehicles once again.

The Model S, the second ground-breaking model from Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain. Unlike an internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, Tesla electric motors have only one moving piece: the rotor. Powered by an 85kWh battery pack with 7,104 cells at 400v, it forms an integral part of the cars structure and can carry enough energy to over 500kms on a single charge.

This example – The 85 – comes standard with a high-performance rear motor, delivering a combined 370hp and 440Nm of torque. Activate the Sport button, step on the torque pedal and in as little as 3.5 seconds, Model S is travelling at 100km/h.

Replete with more technology than an Apple Keynote Event, Model S is entirely controlled by a 17” touchscreen. Adjusting the air-suspension system, customizing the automatic climate control, and changing the radio station all happen with a swipe or a touch. The touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and steering wheel controls seamlessly integrate media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and vehicle data. The Tesla App also allows control of the vehicles charging, controls, climate activation and even a drive, start and summon mode, all from your mobile device.

One of only a small number of 85’s delivered to Australia, it is finished in Silver Metallic with Grey Full Leather & Alcantara Interior: Interior Wood Décor, White Alcantara Headlining, Auto Pilot including Convenience Functions, Tech Package inc. Smart Air Suspension, High Power Wall Connector, Mobile Connector, Free Lifetime Supercharging, Still under battery warranty With a 8 year battery warranty.

Delivered with all updated Firmware, the new AutoPilot System combines a forward-looking camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors with real time traffic updates to automatically drive Model S on the open road and in dense stop and go traffic. Changing lanes becomes as simple as a tap of the turn signal. When you arrive at your destination, Model S will both detect a parking spot and automatically park itself. Standard equipment safety features are constantly monitoring stop signs, traffic signals and pedestrians, as well as for unintentional lane changes. Autopilot features are progressively enabled over time with software updates.

Motor Trend and Carsales “Car of the Year”, Model S is not just for the “tech” set, it’s time for everyone to join the rEVolution. Take advantage of the efficiency and convenience of never visiting a petrol station again, a driving range of 480 kms and access to Tesla’s SuperCharger network for free interstate travel. In Model S, you will be the coolest in the carpark and the fastest to zero.
