2019 Porsche 911 991.2 Speedster

The word Speedster has carried an almost mythical weight in Porsche lore since the mid-1950s.

Born with the 356, it was conceived as the purest expression of driving - stripped of frills, low-slung, and utterly beautiful. Through the decades, the badge has reappeared occasionally, often more as a stylistic homage than a true driver’s car. That is, until this one - the 991-generation Speedster, the first to be honed by Porsche’s GT department and every bit the real thing.

Built by Porsche’s Motorsport division, it borrows its carbon-fibre front wings and bonnet from the 911 R, its rear apron from the GT3 Touring, and its soul from the 991.2 GT3 itself. The naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six remains a masterpiece - one of the great engines of the modern era - revving to 9,000rpm with an intensity that EVO magazine once described as “one of the finest symphonies in motoring.” It produces 503bhp, yet it’s not the power that defines it, but the precision. The throttle response is instant, the clutch has that perfect, weighty bite, and the six-speed manual gearbox - developed exclusively for the Speedster - feels milled from billet steel.

From behind the wheel, it’s a sensory event. The shorter windscreen draws the horizon closer, the open-top experience amplifying every bark and howl of the engine as it climbs through the rev range. The steering is exquisite: light yet surgically accurate, every surface change telegraphed through your fingertips. There’s four-wheel steering, subtly tuned to retain stability without diluting feel. Built in July 2019 and delivered new by Porsche Centre Doncaster, this example is number 634 of just 1,948 produced - and one of only 28 officially delivered to Australia.
