Arguably Triumph’s finest sports car, the TR5 combined all the best qualities of the earlier popular TR series with a powerful fuel injected six-cylinder engine, wrapped in a stylish Italian design.

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, who also penned the Spitfire and jaw dropping Maserati 3500 GT among others, the TR5 PI equipped with a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder engine produced 150hp, 45 more than the outgoing TR4 and was capable of reaching 201km/h and famously despatched the 0-100km/h sprint in just 8.5 seconds.

Motor Magazine described the TR5’s engine as a “truly magnificent power unit” and because of its limited production with just 1,160 cars ever built in RHD and even less surviving the ravages of time, today the TR5 PI is a very collectable and tractable sports classic.

Servo assisted disc brakes also featured as well as independent rear suspension, wide 4.5 inch chrome wire wheels and for the driver the interior was fitted with a sporty padded dash, plush pile carpets, rib sticking contoured bucket seats and a full range of instrumentation.

On offer is this early built TR5 CP107 which left the production line in December 1967 for the home market of the UK. This thorough bred sports car spent its first 20 years of its life in England until a South Australian Triumph enthusiast visiting on vacation in 1988, was told about it tucked away in a barn in Royston, Herts. It was owned by another Triumph enthusiast who had purchased the car a few years earlier with the intention to restore it. In preparation for the restoration, he had collected an array of spare parts. The list was quite impressive with all brand new body parts, interior instruments and engine components all being genuine British Leyland parts.

A deal to purchase the lot was done and everything was shipped down under to Adelaide where it began its multiyear meticulous rotisserie-style restoration by marque specialists. Using all the new parts along with others sourced, every part of the British classic was restored to original standards as it were when sold new by Hollingdrake Automobiles in Stockport, Cheshire in early 1968. This made the car a concours winner when completed and a folder thick full of heritage certificates, original owners' books and receipts complete the pedigree of this machine.

In the late 1990’s the owner was persuaded to part ways where a gentleman from Queensland purchased the car, it was then aquired by CTS and sold to its next owner who proceed to perform a complete mechanical overhaul on the vehicle between 2023 and 2024 with marque specialists. The fuel injection system has also been rebuilt in 2025.

Beautifully restored, this Triumph TR5 makes to be a fantastic opportunity for any collector or enthusiasts.
