Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 Jaguar's E-Type will endure as the most iconic British sports car of all time.
People were writing cheques on the spot and handing them to anyone with a leaping cat embossed on their shirt. It was/is the ultimate automotive expression of the Swinging Sixties. The reason the E-Type was so good - it was a road going Spitfire penned by an infatuated engineer with the gift of thinking instinctively and mathematically in three dimensions.
Malcolm Sayer was an expert at improving the aerodynamic efficiencies of WWII fighter planes. He was a key player to the Le Mans dominating successes of the preceding C and D-Types and his legacy, the E-Type is now a hero of automotive history.
Responding to worldwide demand, in October of 1964 Jaguar shoehorned a more assertive 4.2 litre engine over the outgoing 3.8 into the E-Type along with an all-synchromesh gearbox, stronger brakes and improved electricals.
The result delivered a mountain of usable low end torque and in 1968 stylistic changes saw the addition of new sugar-scoop headlights, revised tail light clusters and a new dashboard with rocker switches in place of the toggles.
