The 625kg wonder! Turns on a dime, seats 5 cosily, big wide clear windows and amazing storage. A real little wonder!
Released in 1967, the Datsun 1000 would quickly become one of the world's most popular small cars, and in just 2 short years Datsun had managed to manufacture and sell over half-a-million of them.It helped that the Datsun 1000 was such a handy little racer, it winningly many rallies throughout Australia.
The DeLuxe edition was offered in Australia only, these were pretty close in spec to the JDM DeLuxe model. the Aussie spec car was better equipped on the showroom floor than the equivalent Japan version. Everything on the brochure option list was available in Australia, including the wood rim steering wheel. Such as a three-speed heater/demister, push button Tach radio, plush carpet, contoured seats and padded dash. The car rode well, was nimble in traffic while still being able to take on the highways, frugal at the bowser and cheap to service.
Bought in December 2013 as a 3-owner car, the last owner was set out to complete something special.
Finding a totally original car which has enjoyed the right attention by its previous owners.
The body and interior is all original. The springs in the seat and the adjustment mechanisms have been re-sprung and rebuilt. Only the front exterior panels has had some paint for when minor work like dent removal was carried out. A lovely Blue pin stripe was also added to spice things up some more.
The car came with its original matching motor and gearbox. The owner sourced a new 1200cc motor from an early low milage Datsun 1200. The new motor was professionally rebuilt and it was bored and stroked with a stroker-crank to 1380cc. Hot camshafts and high compression pistons were fitted along with electronic ignition before the completed motor was tuned on the dyno. Also discovered and fitted is a new old-stock Power-up kit entailing 2 36 PHH Solex Mikunis and manifold with the original box. Even an original new-old stock sports exhaust built by Abarth was found and fitted to the car.
A new Datsun 1000 coupe gearbox was sourced and rebuilt to handle the extra power of the new engine. This was to preserve the original gearbox from the car.
The motor and gearbox build and swap was done at 02150 miles in 2017. As the speedo clocked 99,999 miles in December 2015, this means the fresh engine and gearbox has only done 4,300 miles.
All the Suspension has been serviced and refurbished by the previous owner. All the original drum brakes have been fully rebuilt and also coming with the car is a new front brake disc conversion kit.
To finish off, the car comes with multiple boxes full of receipts and records of all the work, paraphernalia like brochures, catalogues, photos, magazines & workshop manuals in both English and Japanese. Also in the box of goodies is a Japanese music vinyl with the song created to promote the 1000 coupes and loads of spare parts like the original engine and gearbox.
No wonder we call it a wonder. You will too, just drive it!
