In times of an oil crisis and automotive restraint, Porsche showed uncompromising attitude. From its motorsport dominance in virtually every form of international racing, the team at Weissach worked to develop a totally new road car.
With the first production turbocharged sports car, the world held its breath. The result wasn’t just a fast car, but the fastest and most powerful road car they had ever built. The 911 Turbo.Adorned on almost all of our bedroom walls alongside its direct competition, the Testarossa and Countach, the 911 Turbo Type 930 offered a whirring purring air-cooled 3.0 litre flat-six-cylinder engine with single KKK turbocharger and Bosch electronic fuel injection, a robust four-speed manual transmission to handle the immense raw power, independent front and rear suspension, ventilated and cross-drilled power disc brakes all beneath arguably the most evocative Porsche design ever penned.
The 930 became the scene setter and the original story behind the Turbo. The vehicles power and presence proved to be a sensation at debut. Built in March of 1977 and supplied new by Porsches Cars Great Britain, available here we have a very original model year ’77 Porsche 911 Turbo Type 930, one of the last of the 911-Turbos offered with a 3.0 litre motor.
This 911 was ordered in Grand Prix White over Blue Leatherette Interior, presented in rare Martini Livery and optioned with Impact Absorbers, Air Conditioning, Sun Roof, Electric Passenger Side Mirror, Sports Seats and a Blaupunkt Bamberg Autoradio. Indicative of the genuine 23,771 miles travelled, this is the most original and preserved early 911 Turbo we’ve seen.
The 911 sat in storage for approximately 30 years before landing on Australian shores in 2015 hence the low mileage. Shortly after it had arrived, the Porsche was the subject of a total mechanical overhaul completed by renowned Melbourne Porsche specialist. This included a total rebuild of the motor, transmission and renewal of the brakes and suspension.
Accompanying the car is a Porsche Cars GB supplied Certificate of Authenticity confirming the 911 to be a numbers matching example and a folio of receipts documenting the works completed.
If Porsche has its legends, then the 911 Turbo is its masterpiece. As the fastest production car in the world, its captivated enthusiasts and pushed the limits of what was possible in a supercar.
