Engineers who went about weight reduction for this barely disguised race car for the road, shaving a few grams using an adhesive Porsche shield decal on the nose and thus creating an added aerodynamic benefit of uninterrupted airflow over the bonnet is the obsessive level of detail Porsche went to in creating the Type 996 GT3 RS.

After the Type 993 Carrera RS, Rennsport fans had to wait nearly a decade for the next ‘RS’ badged 911. When it eventually arrived, the ‘Carrera’ name was out and replaced by the new motorsport moniker: GT3.

The 996 GT3 RS mirrored the original 2.7 RS with just two colour choices but importantly is over twice as rare.

It too served as a homologation model intended to be the basis for motor sport activities in accordance with international GT rules and inspired so much demand it spawned an entirely new generation of 911’s still produced to this day.

With 280kW (381hp) pumping from its wailing 3.6-litre boxer six, roll cage, fire extinguisher, colossal carbon-fibre rear wing that can be lifted with just one finger, carbon fibre bonnet, Plexiglass rear screen and fabled Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes, this exceedingly rare GT3 RS is essentially a street legal Cup Car and packs a power to weight ratio punch of 4.86kg per kilowatt, proper supercar numbers.

A GT3 to brag about, the car offered is 1 of just 140 right hand drive cars ever made. A totally original and Australian delivered car optioned with Red script and travelled just 16,000 kilometres this GT3 RS offers a valid reason to take the day off and escape mundane.

As the GT3 moniker stares at a future of PDK, turbocharging and electronic trickery this rare and superb car offers a truly authentic, clutch in, clutch out, brake, weight shift, turn in RS drive.

Not only does this car represent a proud chapter within Porsche’s heritage but it re-wrote what Porsche define as their halo car leaving an indelible mark on one of the greatest auto manufacturing brands forever.

One for the white knuckle driver in all of us and the cornerstone of any Porsche collection this 996 GT3 RS is a must experience.
