The Ultimate Classic in Japanese Luxury Motoring

Created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Toyota founder Sakichi Toyoda’s birth in 1967, the legendary Toyota Century stands as one of the most quietly confident symbols of the brand’s prestige over the past half-century.

Largely unknown outside Japan, this upper-class luxury sedan was designed from the beginning to be built in small numbers—prioritizing refinement, craftsmanship, and exclusivity over mass production. To achieve this, Toyota entrusted the assembly of the Century to Kanto Auto Works Ltd., where it is meticulously hand-built.

The attention to detail is extraordinary. Its signature black or dark blue finish—although this example wears a rare Dark Green—features seven layers of hand-applied paint. Chrome elements such as the bumpers, sills, and mirror caps are polished by hand over countless hours, exemplifying a level of artisanal dedication rarely seen in automotive production.

The Century was also a pioneer—it was the first Japanese car equipped with air suspension, and the first engineered specifically for chauffeur-driven comfort. From its debut in 1967, the Century received only one significant update in 1997: a transition from a V8 to a bespoke 5.0-litre V12 engine, exclusive to this model and never used in any other Toyota. Featuring 48 valves and variable valve timing, this smooth powerhouse produced an official 296 hp, though actual performance figures are widely believed to surpass that—restricted only by the Japanese Gentleman’s Agreement capping horsepower at 300.

Inside, the car is a sanctuary. Full electronic adjustment includes the ability for rear occupants to move the front passenger seat via controls in the back, ensuring perfect positioning for the leg and footrests. This particular Century, driven just 49,000 km, was used sparingly to chauffeur executives along Japan’s expressways. The condition of the leather interior and even the delicate doily-style blinds reflect the care of its previous owner, presenting nearly as new.

Whether you're heading to an exclusive event or cruising long-distance, the Toyota Century’s V12 promises a ride of unparalleled grace and comfort. This is a rare opportunity to own a refined, understated, and uniquely quirky icon of Japanese automotive history.
