THE quintessential sports classic that manages to distil all the facets of the automobile down to the most visceral basics in the best possible way, the Type A was a pioneer for a new breed of MG sports car, thrusting the Abingdon Company into a progressive era of automotive design.
The MG A replaced the T-series cars and brought with it with sleekly streamlined bodywork evolved from a series of racing prototypes intended for Le Mans.Featuring everything needed for the ultimate drive: a rev-happy engine, 4 speed manual transmission, knock-off wire wheels, rack and pinion steering, dual carburettors, a sports exhaust, tachometer, folding convertible top and just two bucket seats, the MG A was engineered purely for motoring entertainment.
The CKD or Completely Knocked Down, Australian made car offered here is a late 1961 MG A 1600 “Deluxe” in the rarely seen and original combination of Katoomba Grey over Deep Red vinyl.
Limited in production and with few surviving today, the Deluxe models are widely known as “the rarest MG A models ever made” and were essentially a TwinCam without the TwinCam engine.
That means disc brakes at all four wheels, the more sporting TwinCam chassis, collapsible roof, luggage rack, adjustable steering column, wire wheels and premium interior trim.
Restored to original specification some years ago and recently upgraded with an alternator and electronic ignition for improved reliability, this MG A is one of the rarest models and best preserved we’ve ever come across.
Recently serviced by marque specialists based in Sydney, the MG A’s desirable point-and-shoot driving dynamics and sure-footed underpinnings are evident in just a short stint behind the wheel of this fantastic sports classic.
With characteristic English panache; punchy, alive and seriously smile inducing from the exhaust note to the mechanical feel moving through all 4 gears this MG A is absolutely on the button.
One of the finest and rarest examples we’ve seen this MG A Deluxe is excellently prepared to drive off the showroom floor and offers the perfect getaway car for escaping to your favourite café, beach or weekend picnic spot. Especially as the weather tempers to conditions more conducive to classic motoring.
