For decades, Mercedes-Benz built an enduring reputation for cost-no-object engineering, reliability, and Panzer-Wagen build quality that many would argue began with the W116 generation of the 70’s.

The W116 was the first big-bodied Benz to formally receive the S-Class name and in 1972 it pioneered technologies like electronic anti-lock brakes and a reinforced passenger cell with impact-absorbing crumple zones.

The W116’s refinement and avant-garde style set standards that we take for granted in modern cars and here in Australia we received the European W116’s that came with small bumpers, more modern single-unit headlights and higher horsepower engines as opposed to the States.

Every so often, we uncover an out and out time warp classic, and that’s exactly what is offered here.

According to its original bill of sale, this Australian delivered Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Saloon was sold new to a wealthy farmer from the rural town of Romsey, Victoria in August of 1976 ordered in Caledonian Green over Parchment MB Tex trim with a Eurovox AM/FM Radio- exactly as the car presents today.

With zero modifications and in outstanding and totally original and unrestored condition, this rare find has travelled less than 71,000 kilometres. The term time-warp covers every aspect of this car. Under the bonnet and in the door jams all of the factory information decals are still present, inside, the dash still has its matte factory finish and the controls show zero signs of wear and outside, the bodywork is gun-barrel straight with the factory production dates still white-stamped on the inside of the rubber seals.

A twist of the key and the high-revving 2.8 litre dual-overhead-camshaft (DOHC) straight-six with Bosch fuel injection and 180 horsepower roars into life.

A short stint behind the wheel and you can tell this car has been cherished. The superb steering feel, pedal weight and effortless gearshift showcase its low kilometres and sitting in the driver’s seat transports you right back to a Mercedes-Benz showroom floor in the rose tinted 1970’s when this car had a sticker price of the equivalent of $120,000.00.

Accompanied by its complete book pack including a bill of sale, original key, stamped maintenance booklet, Owner’s Manual, Datacard, stereo brochure and original certificate of registration this impossibly original 280 SE would have to be the finest in the country.

In superb running order, eligible for historic registration and the perfect excuse for a 6am Sunday wake-up for coffee and cars this rarely seen 280 SE Saloon is one to take to the bank.
