The Paris Motor Show 1973. After 20 years of exclusive collaboration with Pininfarina, Ferrari unveil the Dino 308 GT4, a V8-engined Coupé designed by Bertone. The Turin-based designer created an attractive mid-engined 2+2 in a body that was little more than 4.3 metres long, an outstanding achievement.
A revolution for Ferrari, because it was Ferrari’s first production V8 (excluding the V8 used by Ferrari in F1 in the 1950s & it was the first new Ferrari GT for 20 years to be shaped by anyone other than Pininfarina. The GT4’s 2+2 layout makes this a very practical and comfortable Ferrari, with longer front-seat adjustment than the two seaters. By placing the front seats well forward, Bertone made room for two children (or one sideways-seated adult) in the rear, while the compact engine/transaxle package left space behind the engine bay for a luggage compartment.
The engine is remarkably flexible given its high power output. Drive to the transmission is by step-down gears, so their noise is a constant accompaniment, plus a roar from the V8 when extended.
The engine is superb, revving to 7,700rpm in an era when most even quite sporting motors went pop not much beyond 6,000rpm, and staying so smooth it’s still yelling for more as the redline approaches.
We are so excited to offer such a unique-charismatic Ferrari in the condition it deserves.
