1993 Porsche 911 964 Carrera 2 Wide Body

When the 911 Type 964 was first brought to market, Porsche was keen to emphasise that, although it was patently still a 911, it was in fact 87% different from the outgoing model.

Displacement was raised to 3600cc, producing an impressive (even by today’s standards) 250hp, power steering and ABS brakes were now fitted as standard and the old torsion bar rear suspension was replaced with coil springs and shock absorbers. Careful attention was also paid to aerodynamics with a reduced drag coefficient down to 0.32, and with virtually zero lift stability and road holding at high speeds was greatly improved.

In 1991, Porsche in Australia saw the reintroduction of the flagship 911 Turbo that had been absent for over 5 years, however lovers of the “wide-bodied” look of the 911 Carrera had to wait another year before a normally aspirated version arrived in 1992.

We are lucky enough to have located one of the 4 Australian, manual, Carrera 2 “Turbo bodied” Cabriolets. Delivered new by Hamiltons Melbourne in Amazon Green Metallic over a Black leather interior made it a centre piece of the showroom floor. It was sold locally and has spent the majority of its life down in Victoria.

Stepping through the masterfully made door apertures you immediately notice how well this car has been maintained, from the original Porsche switch gear, VDO instrumentation, leather seats, steering wheel and door cards with typical Porsche precision double stitching. The rear haunches are the first thing you notice when looking in the rearview mirrors, the turbo wide body gives the car a strong presence which when unaccompanied by the whale tail requires a second take.

This 964 comes with its Porsche leather wallet containing all its manuals and a full Porsche or Porsche Specialist service history, that being combined with its rareness makes it a car for the Porsche collector who has it all.

One of the rarest 911’s ever to have been produced and a car that re-defined sports performance within an era where raw designs and leading edge concepts were drawn on airport lounge napkins this modern classic is both a driver’s car and an out and out collectors car- something that will never be repeated.
