Penned by Erwin Komenda, famous for also designing the Auto-Union Grand Prix racer, the Porsche Type 356 was first introduced in 1948 and is today regarded as one of the most pure, purpose built sports cars ever designed.

Over a 15-year production run, the handsome and durable 356 evolved from a streamlined aluminium-bodied coupe powered by the VW-derived 46hp, air-cooled flat four into a seriously lively autobahn burner carrying an advanced, two-litre four-cam boxer Carrera engine producing 130 horsepower.

The 356’s final incarnation came with the Type 6 in 1963. Designated the 356 C, it had all-new ZF steering and a compensating spring at the rear, the latter calming the swing axle suspension for high speed stability.

Four-wheel disc brakes formed a major part of the revision, a 12-volt electrical system became available and new styling saw a larger rear window, beautifully re-designed horn-ring steering-wheel and twin rear grills.

By far and away, the most popular and pure Porsche body style of the era was the coupé. With curvaceous proportions, not a straight line in site and performance and luxury to match, the 356 C is purpose made for threading winding weekend roads.

We’re proud to offer this exceedingly rare Australian delivered and numbers matching 1964 Porsche 356 C recently, released from long-term ownership and presented in the classic combination of Light Ivory over Tan leather trim.

Corresponding with its detailed history file this car was sold new through Hamiltons of Melbourne to a prominent Porsche collector in May of 1965 optioned with a chrome luggage rack and “used only as a second car around the metropolitan area”- according to the Porsche club records.

This handsome car was then sold to another Melbourne based Porsche enthusiast and club member with whom it resided with for the next 47 years, something we seldom see.

Artfully finished, between 1993 and 1994 the car was the subject of a professional and zero expense spared restoration that included a bare-metal re-spray, mechanical overhaul and masterfully detailed re-trim of the entire interior to factory specification.

The original engine, transmission, suspension componentry and braking systems were all rebuilt to exacting standards and the result has delivered a very original 356 C that doesn’t just carry an unmatched road presence but delivers a smooth and well-balanced drive- one of the best we’ve experienced.

The crowning jewel in any 356 is the interior. Re-trimmed by classic specialist Gary Blackman, Melbourne this 356 C still features the original timber rimmed deep dish and ultra-light-weight steering wheel, the new and correct coco-mat carpets are neatly fitted, the original Green VDO gauges are still present and accounted for and the leather upholstery from the seats to the dash has also been painstakingly well fitted.

Under the bonnet presents in the same smart and original fashion, from the correct decals to the tidy wiring and original crinkle finish heat shield this 356 C has been excellently well prepared. A credit to its last custodian and an asset to the next.

The condition outside is also stellar. The paintwork has a brilliant depth of finish that’s offset by flashes of chrome across the luggage rack, the original crested hub-caps and the ADR specification overriders. The road presence of this classic sports car is unrivalled, even the period correct Michelin XZX tyres feature as well as small details like the correct Bosch head lamps, Sekurit window glass and Porsche Club badges.

An iconic sports classic, forever attached to immortal names like James Dean, Steve McQueen and Janis Joplin, the Porsche Type 356 will always command a certain cachet other sports cars can only lust after.

As the classic car market moves from strength to strength internationally, it becomes harder and harder to find cars like this that lead the charge in collectability and usability.

Full of character, masterfully re-built and intoxicating to drive this Porsche 356 C is the best car to buy if you want to get the last of and best equipped pre-911 Porsche. Australian delivered, numbers matching and accompanied by Porsche service history, magazine articles, club information and even original registration documents dating back to 1968 this brilliant car would suit the avid enthusiast or even the most discerning collector.
