From the distinguished Austin-Healey 100 to the iconic Austin-Healey 3000, the brand's prominence in the sports car world is unparalleled. This legacy continues with the 1955 Austin-Healey, a vehicle that embodies the essence of Austin-Healey, pushing the boundaries of excellence in a way that no other sports car does.
With nothing to stop the Austin Healey 100/4’s ability to reach 100mph, the 1950’s sportscar is considered to deliver the most original and most pure driving experience of all the big Healey’s- agile, punchy and incredibly versatile.
With muscular styling, a tarmac tearing 90hp engine which racing historian Griffith Borgeson wrote "Such high torque at low engine speed is one of the competition assets of the Austin-Healey. Another is its durability", independent front suspension with live rear- axle and leaf-springs, lightweight steel construction, a racy lay-down windscreen and an engaging 3 speed manual transmission with overdrive the 100/4 had manufacturers like MG, Triumph and Jaguar scrambling to keep up. The BN1 also forwent racing and in 1952 entered the 24hrs of Le Mans finishing in 12th and 14th places, an incredibly noteworthy achievement for what were essentially mildly modified road cars.
Available here is an Australian delivered 1954 Austin Healey 100/4 BN1 delivered new through Austin Distributors Melbourne, Australia on Christmas Eve in 1954.
Presented in its factory colour combination of Spruce Green over Green interior with a Green hood this very original and meticulously preserved survivor has travelled 159,191 documented miles from new.
Still retaining its correct engine which numbers correlate to its chassis mated to its original 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive we are so excited to have this beautiful original example of a BN1 with absolutely superb history.
Sold new to Mr Robert Foster of 27 Kennealy Street, Surrey Hills, Victoria Australia as his personal vehicle who was subsequently a Director of Austin Distributors Pty Ltd, Melbourne distributing all Austin cars, truck and utilities to the state of Victoria.
Original deposit slip receipt and full payment receipt dated 21/7/55, plus original documents issued by Austin Distributors Pty Ltd. Mr Foster owned and cherished the vehicle until he passed away in the mid 1990’s. During this period, he maintained and cared for this car in a way which is rarely seen, and this reflects in the vehicle’s condition today.
There are many original books, receipts and other paperwork confirming his dedication. On Mr Forster’s demise, his wife retained the vehicle until 1998, when she sold it to Mr Ian Stewart of Perth, Western Australia. The reason for this was that she felt it was time to move on, and to do so she preferred to sell the vehicle interstate, as there would be less emotional attachment.
Mr Stewart, a car collector, lived in South Perth, Western Australia – where he kept the vehicle in his garage and covered at all times. The car was rarely driven, as was his MG, Porsche, motor bikes etc.
In March 2015, the vehicle was purchased from Mr Stewart and the owner set about bringing the vehicle maintenance up to date. No major repairs were required, with most things like brake linings, fuel filter, SU carby’s, batteries, exhaust system, new plug points, fuel pump being serviced and/or fitted.
Whilst mostly standard configuration across the board, this vehicle does feature a steel Weslake head which improves engine horsepower and performance.
Accompanying the sale is all its original deposit slips, purchase documenting, registration certificates, logbooks detailing every service and fuel fill from over the course of the 40-year ownership of RG Foster. It's also got logs of every ownership, including documented details of anything and everything that has been done to the vehicle over its life.
This beautiful turn-key and original Austin Healey 100/4 BN1 would be a great addition to any collection or the perfect first classic, don’t miss this opportunity to acquire an iconic that will always be remembered and famed for its nimble and small stature yet great big attitude.
