From the March 1958 Issue of Car and Driver “Seldom, if ever, remembering back over the last few years, have we ever met a man who bought a TR2 or a TR3 and regretted the purchase”.
1955 marked the introduction of one of Triumph’s most successful models, the Triumph TR3, which won races, rallies and the adoration of the enthusiast road going market. The TR3 was well-known for its performance, powered by a 1,991cc inline four cylinder producing a dynamic 100 horsepower (five more than the earlier TR2 thanks to larger SU-H6 carburettors) that could be white knuckle inducing and/or ultra-smooth - depending on how you introduced the throttle.
The TR3 was campaigned in races, hill climbs, and rallies across the world with several outright, team, and class victories filling trophy cabinets the world over.
It was in 1957 that a facelifted model, the TR3-A was released, the new model featured a wider front grill, practical exterior door handles, a lockable boot handle and a full tool kit as standard (optional on the TR3).
Offered here is a superbly restored 1958 Triumph TR3A with Overdrive, presented in stunning Admiral Blue over Biscuit trim.
The subject of a masterful restoration in the late 1990’s under the guidance of its then Triumph Club and avid enthusiast owner, this incredibly tidy example today is in excellent running and driving condition.
Since the restoration, all tell-tale signs show that this TR3A has been cherished. The engine is in great tune, producing ample torque, delivered to the rear wheels through the easy to use 4 speed manual gearbox, with overdrive (great for the highway) and the handling is razor sharp.
The interior is impeccably preserved too, one of the finest TR3 interior’s we’ve seen from the neatly fitted carpets to the seemingly unused bucket seats, door cards and dash trim and genuine Motor-Lita timber rimmed steering wheel. A gorgeous place to sit for short and long distances.
Available with an extensive folio of parts receipts dated to the restoration, hand written notes, user manuals and a collection of TR3 Club newsletters dating from 1993-2001 plus a new soft-top roof, tonneau cover and side-windows for those colder days this TR3A is one of the best presented and best driver’s we’ve ever found.
The perfect Sunday driver and the perfect use of that now un-usable holiday fund, escape the city and tour the countryside in this engaging, collectable and fun TR3A.
