When the first 901 prototypes rolled out in the early '60s, all of them were coupes. But while Porsche was still daydreaming about developing an open-top 911, the U.S. government was busy worrying about safety and toying with the idea of banning convertibles altogether due to rollover risks.

With the US market being so dominate for the brand, Porsche had a choice: scrap the open-top idea or get clever. Enter the “Safety Convertible.” Designers, led by “Butzi” Porsche, came up with a solution that would let you enjoy the wind in your hair with the added safety.

The design featured a wide steel roll hoop with a stainless-steel cover behind the front seats, a foldable fabric panel between the hoop and windshield, and a zip-out plastic rear window. Porsche branded the model the “Targa” to celebrate Porsche’s victory at the 1967 Targa Florio race in Sicily—because nothing says “winning” like naming your car after a legendary race. The Targa hit the streets in 1967, with only 483 made that model year makes them an incredibly rare gem.

We are excited to bring to market chassis no. 500456S, a 1967 Porsche 911 S “Soft-Window” Targa. Ordered new in colour code 6605 Bahama Yellow over Black leatherette, Dunlop Tires and a Webasto heater, this vehicle was manufactured in May 1967 and was delivered to Cologne, Germany.

We can place this Porsche in California, United States as early as 1986 where it remained before being imported to Australia by Porsche Classics in 1999, at this point it was presented in Red over Black.

In 2016 it was commissioned to undergo a sympathetic restoration to original colour and specification by its owner residing in South Australia through a local marque specialist.

By early 2023, the vehicle assembly had been completed, the original gearbox and engine were rebuilt, the interior installed, and the restoration of this stunning vehicle was complete.

Such a rare example this vehicle is a blue-chip collectible. With vehicles overseas achieving prices well into the $400,000+ USD, this example is a great buying and an even better opportunity for a long-term investment but also ready to be enjoyed and driven to your next Car's and Coffee.
