Launched in 1967 the “S” was the top of the 911 range powered by a 2.0 litre six which was fed by two triple-choke Weber IDS carbs and tuned for peak torque at 5200 rpm, with little dropoff in power until the 7200-rpm redline.

This quickly leaped the 911 “S” into the books as the club racer’s choice, the sort of car you’d hammer at the track all weekend and then drive home. Porsche caught wind of the ever-growing popularity of this sportier 911 and began to make tweaks to keep it competitive.

Most importantly, for 1972 all Porsche 911 variants received the 2.4L MFI motor, by which the range-topping 911 S received the stronger type 915 gearbox and 6” x 15" Fuchs alloy wheels as standard as well as the addition of a small chin spoiler adopted to improve high-speed stability.

The ‘S’ variant - 2.7 Carrera RS excepted - was the pinnacle of the original, small-bumper 911. As the top of the range S model was fast, expensive and the smart choice for the wealthy driving enthusiasts aware of Porsche’s triumphs on the track.

For 1972 only, 911s were fitted with an external oil filler ‘Ölklappe' for the engine's dry-sump oil tank and the tank was moved forward to improve weight distribution.
The oil tank and filler’s hasty return to their original position was due to the fact service station attendants often mistook it for the fuel filler.
With the ‘Ölklappe' 911s built for just 1 year, they are exceedingly rare and particularly sought after by purists as ‘the one to have’.

Available here is this stunning Frankfurt, German delivered 1972 Porsche 911 S ‘Ölklappe', beautifully restored in its original specification of Gold Metallic over Black leatherette and Pepita interior, being offered to the market for the first time in its concours state.

Found in the dry state of Nevada USA in the early 2000’s as an engine/chassis matching car with little to no rust it was quickly snatched up and brought to Australia. The new custodian had big plans but over the course of many years lost momentum, so the car sat until being acquired by the current owner who was ready to take on the project.

With gold flakes under the red paint glistening through the new owner started to do some digging and discovered the original spec of this “S” was Gold metallic, this slippery realisation led to the car being sent off to Porsche specialist restorer Zag Automotive for full back to bare-metal restoration. With any budget at this point being thrown out the window it only made sense to send the engine away to marque specialist Michael Newton for a complete mechanical rebuild. With that said and done, the resurrection of this exceedingly special Porsche began.

Landing on our showroom floor fresh from this 2-year painstaking nut and bolt restoration and ready to teleport its new owner back to 1972 With its super retro and ultra-cool colour combination, this beautifully designed 911 S is an absolutely gem and provides the ideal blend of classic performance, aesthetics, immaculate condition and rarity.
