Before becoming a silver screen star, the simple-yet-elegant, Pininfarina penned Kamm tail Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider was introduced in 1966, superseding the vaunted Giulia Spider.

The new Spider was no sheep in wolf’s clothing, technologically cutting edge it featured a super light aluminium alloy 1.6 litre engine with a whopping 109hp, discs at each corner, an ultra-modern coil sprung suspension set-up, aero styling and a notchy 5 speed manual.

To put the Alfa into perspective, the most popular British sportscar at the time was the MG B with 95 horses, drum brakes, leaf springs and a 4 speed trans. The Alfa could run rings around it blindfolded with one hand tied behind its back and it looked like a perfectly tailored suit doing it.

Benefitting from a major and sympathetic refurbishment between 2008-2010, the car offered is an Australian delivered 1973 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider presenting in original Grigio Vesuvio over Black leather trim.

All parts used to rebuild the car were painstakingly sourced from Classic Alfa based in the UK with zero expense spared from the stylish timber Alfa embossed shift knob to the form fitted soft-top.

Excellently maintained post restoration and regularly driven as a weekend escape car, the finer details from the correct plexi-glass Carello headlight covers, neatly fitted and beautifully re-chromed bumpers, lightweight MOMO style alloys to the retro switch gear and chrome Jaeger gauges highlight a stand out and very original car.

A short stint behind the wheel seats you in one of the most characterful interiors within the classic car world. Surrounded by flashes of the Alfa emblem, exotic Italian stlying and of course the iconic timber rimmed steering wheel to hang on tight to, with the top down you hear the snarl of the twin-cam two-litre four as you plant your right foot.

Acceleration is instant, the pedal feel is well balanced and corners become your best friend. There are no tricks to driving this car; it’s communicative, with light controls and plenty to offer the rev head in all of us.

Accompanied by a detailed history file with receipts for service works and all parts sourced during the restoration as well as an owner’s manual this brilliant Alfa 2000 Spider is all of your classic driver aspirations in one.

Add a little classic Italian sophistication to everyday life. Incredibly hard to find in this condition with unrivalled provenance and perfectly prepped to cruise sun-dappled country roads for an espresso and biscotti this 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 is something exceptional.
