Rock-solid, sporty, commodious, and packed with the latest engineering technologies and luxury options for the time, the W123 280 CE Mercedes-Benz could very well be the last car you’ll ever need.
Topping the range with 185hp on tap from its silky and free revving 2.8 litre double-overhead-camshaft straight six, and its timeless pillarless design, in a 1978 review Motor magazine said “the 280 CE’s performance enables the car's outstanding road manners to be explored and appreciated to the full.”Ticking just about every box for an everyday classic driver the 280 CE features double wishbone front suspension with anti-dive geometry, zero-offset steering, disc-brakes, power-steering, power windows and mirrors, an optional sunroof, headrests, central locking and radio-cassette all with characteristically and unsurpassed Germanic build quality.
Eminently usable, it’s becoming increasingly harder to find a low mileage, well-kept example and in fact, Mercedes even went rallying with the 280 CE.
Sold new by Yorkstar Mercedes-Benz, Sydney in March of 1980, this exceedingly original 280 CE presents in factory Citrus Green over Cream MB Tex and Walnut trim travelling just 98,000 kilometres.
Most recently serviced in May of this year, this beautifully kept car is something quite special. Optioned with sunroof and still fitted with its original Becker Mexico radio the interior is awash with the finest fittings from the correct “golf-club” gear shifter, totally clear gauges, and still firm to the touch switch gear all in seemingly unused condition.
Simplicity in three dimensions, this 280 CE’s bodywork is second to none. The German build quality has stood the test of time with skin tight panel gaps, the quirky paintwork still carries a glass like finish, the bright work shows no signs of pitting and small details like the perfectly preserved bumper rubbers and even the cars overall stance reveal a truly cherished car.
With the car comes the original maintenance booklet with datacard and corresponding owner’s manuals, the Becker radio service manual, receipts for modern servicing as well as the Mercedes-Benz hallmarked original key bound within the plastic MB wallet.
Offering a front engined, rear wheel drive lay-out, a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 9.5 seconds, luggage space for 4, brilliant tech and a timeless sporty design this 280 CE is a first-class sports classic.
One for the driver and the collector in all of us, this gutsy, excellently well preserved classic makes so much sense on so many levels.
