8 cylinders, 2 doors, 286 horsepower, lavish equipment, flared wheel arches, BMW racing pedigree and an ultra-aggressive wedge design. This was BMW’s flagship model launched at the 1989 Frankfurt International Motorshow, the super exotic, and forward thinking E31 8-Series Super Grand Tourer.

One of the most technologically advanced cars of its time with its pillarless design and drag co-efficient less than the McLaren F1, the 840 Ci features a Motorola International 2000 mobile-phone hard wired into the centre console, the seats are electronically adjustable with memory functionality, the windows raise and lower automatically when the door is opened and closed to reduce drag and wind noise, there’s programmable climate control, cruise control, ABS, CD player, retractable headlights that never lose their novelty and it has both stability and traction control.

But best of all is the way this Super Grand Tourer delivers its unwavering power to the road. A blend of exciting rawness and refinement that so many of our modern cars have become immune too, you can feel traces of BMW’s M1 Supercar and historical racing pedigree through the base of the seat and steering wheel, it’s capable of firing from 0-100km/h in just under 7 white knuckle inducing seconds with zero compromise for comfort.

Delivered new by Doncaster Motors BMW, Melbourne in November of 1995 this mint condition BMW 840ci has travelled just 36,000 kilometres, originally optioned in Bright Red over Black Nappa leather trim with sunroof and 17” Throwing Star alloys- exactly as it presents today.

Recently released from its original owner and subsequently held with a well-known private collector, the way in which this 840ci has been preserved is a credit to the last custodian and an asset to the next.

In time-warp condition, the totally original cockpit shows zero signs of wear. The double stitched leather upholstery across the seats, centre console and door cards is as new, the command central style dash with its iconic BMW instrumentation still carries its factory matte finish with each white character unblemished and the touch points from the leather steering wheel, sportingly bolstered seats and crush pile carpets are ageless.

The exterior of the car is much the same with its original glass-like paint finish kept meticulously well, the original alloys are also blemish free and with zero modifications all of the original BMW stamped light lenses, quad exhausts, badges and Sekurit glass represent tell-tale signs of a cherished car.

In accompaniment are all of the original owners and warranty manuals and service booklets showing delivery information, the original keys and even the BMW pen and torch kept within the glove-box.

What remains the only BMW ever produced with an “8” prefix, designed to showcase BMW’s standards of excellence, athletic spirit and exceptional performance this exceedingly well kept, Australian delivered and low kilometre BMW 840ci will surpass any expectation.

Universally collectable and eminently usable this 1995 BMW 840 Ci isn’t just one to watch, its one to own.
