Released in 1993, the fourth-generation 911, the Type 993 represented an 80% evolution over the outgoing Type 964 and the overall look was much smoother and more integrated- penned by design icon Tony Hatter who was also responsible for the 911 GT1 Race Car.
Touted as the most collectable contemporary 911, the 993 is arguably Porsche’s last truly hand-built car. It’s the benchmark of build quality all other 911’s before and after are compared to and it’s also the last 911 to feature the hair-raising whirring/purring air-cooled flat-six.The biggest change to the 993 was the all new multi-link rear suspension set-up, giving greater driver confidence, less road noise and excellent ride quality. The Type 993 911 was also the first 911 to be equipped with power steering and an advanced ABS system.
August 1995 heralded a major performance upgrade for the 993 with the introduction of 'Varioram' induction, boosting power from 272hp to 285hp, enabling a top speed close to 274km/h with white knuckle acceleration to match.
Uniquely available here is one of the last three Type 993’s delivered to Australia within its final production year, exceptionally well maintained by just the single owner since new and travelled just 13,200 kilometres.
Sold new by Scuderia Veloce Porsche, Sydney in March of 1998 and ordered in Ocean Blue over Classic Grey leather trim this stunning car was optioned in the Targa Body style with its retractable glass roof and nomenclature adapted from the famous Targa Florio race Porsche dominated in the late 60’s and 70’s.
This rare car features the automatic tiptronic S transmission that operates as a normal automatic but also allows the driver to override auto mode and shift using the spring loaded gate or steering wheel “upshift” “downshift” buttons. There’s also air-conditioning, cruise control, Hi-Fi audio, electronic seats, windows, mirrors, Targa-top and spoiler as well as the optional 2 piece alloys.
Noticeably treasured and exceedingly original, all tell-tale signs show just how well this car has been maintained from the smooth perforated leather seats, crystal clear original VDO instrumentation, even the leather bound steering wheel feels new and the switchgear from the cruise control stalk to the retractable roof button is seemingly untouched. All indicative of the low kilometres this car has travelled.
The drive is also superb; solid, precise and immensely powerful- a short stint behind the wheel smacks you with why enthusiasts believe the Type 993 is the definitive 911- the air-conditioning works well, the pedal feel is perfectly balanced and you’re surrounded by all the essential mod cons to keep you comfortable even through the daily grind.
Boasting a zero expense spared service history this car has been religiously serviced by Porsche since new, with the most recent in May of this year.
Accompanied by its original service and owner’s manuals bound within the leather Porsche wallet and original key this exceptional 993 Targa is something extraordinarily special.
A unique opportunity to invest in one of the last, lowest kilometre and greatest 911’s ever produced, this exceptional 993 Targa is perfectly prepared to blast through winding weekend roads and/or enliven your daily commute. After all, as Ferry Porsche once said- “The 911 is the only car that you can drive from an African Safari to Le Mans, then to the theatre and onto the streets of New York”.
