WPCS 2.1.0

The MX-5 SP (Special Performance) was a limited production, turbo charged model created solely for the Australian market in 2002 and built in just 100 units.

The first MX-5 to feature a turbo charger, once given the OK from Japan, Mazda Australia, in conjunction with Prodrive (at the time Ford owned a large share in Mazda and already had motorsport links with Prodrive in Australia) upgraded the MX-5 with a Garrett GT2560R ball bearing turbo, bespoke cast manifold, intercooler, higher capacity radiator, upgraded fuel injectors, ECU remap, carbon fibre airbox, and stainless sports exhaust system.

The turbo install was low boost at 8 psi to maintain reliability of the otherwise standard engine and six-speed transmission, which were backed by a factory warranty and works significantly improved power by a whopping 44kW to 157kW @ 6800rpm and 289Nm @ 4600rpm.

This, was enough to make the SP a true grin cracker.

Motor Magazine March, 2020- “I’ve driven a few MX-5 SPs over the years, and I’ve gotta tell you, the thing has improved with age”.

There are all the usual standard features as well like ABS anti-lock brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, remote locking, cruise control, power windows, a glass rear window with demister, CD player, front fog lamps and dual airbags, and air-con was optional.

The superb 2002 Mazda MX-5 SP offered here was delivered new by John Newell Mazda, Sydney ordered in Sunlight Silver over Black honeycomb cloth and has travelled a fully documented 74,276 Kilometres.

Accompanied by a complete service history from new, this car has just been released by its second owner of the last 15 years from a classic car collection and is in well preserved and totally original condition.

Featuring all of the correct SP parts, from the carbon air box, “Mazda Motorsports” and SP decals to the original SP interior chrome trim with honeycomb fabric seats and matching carpets this low kilometre car would have to be one of the best surviving examples left.

Offered with its complete original book pack with warranty cards and service receipts and both original keys this collectable modern classic is unrivalled.

After Mazda saw the success of this SP model, it then produced the SE that unfortunately, received a much milder 121KW but today has made the SP an out and out cult classic.

Ready to drive and enjoy off the showroom floor, this rare find is something special.
