A conflicted renaissance man, Lotus founder, Colin Chapman was only ever really interested in building racing cars but his fledgling company needed a firm commercial foundation on which to survive and grow.

His curvaceous and totally driver engaging solution was the Lotus Type 14 Elite.

Penned by Peter Kirwan-Taylor, Frank Costin, brother of one of the co-founders of Cosworth and the Chief Aerodynamic Engineer for the de Havilland Aircraft Company, the Elite produced an incredibly low drag coefficient of just 0.29 – low even by modern sports car standards and remarkable considering the engineers achieved it without computer-aided design.

A road-come-racing Grand Touring Coupe, the Elite was first announced in 1956 as the pioneering forerunner of a new age of composite-construction and monocoque-chassised performance cars.

An ultralight two-seater, the Elite only weighs around 500kgs and produces 105hp. It’s considered by classic car collectors to be one of the most beautiful cars of all time and its provenance is crowned with 6 class wins at the 24hrs of Le Mans in the 1960’s.

The storied car offered is a genuine and original right hand drive, 1959 Lotus Elite, built as an homage to the Lumsden/Riley car which won the 1500cc class at Le Mans in 1959.

This peerless car, with all fluids and driver included weighs just 800kgs and produces just over 100hp. And, with its all-aluminum Coventry Climax 4-cylinder engine, advanced aerodynamics and fully independent suspension with disc-brakes all-round is perfect for breathing life into your weekend drives.

Presented in British Racing Green over Tan leather trim this Elite was manufactured by Lotus Cars of Chestnut, England in late 1959 and was then delivered new to California, USA in January of 1960 where it remained until 2003.

Arriving on Australian shores in 2004 and forming part of a meticulously maintained collection, this stunning car has recently been serviced and offers a unique opportunity to own a significant slice of Lotus’ unrivaled history.

Accompanied by a significant history file, with an original brochure included this rare car would make the perfect addition to any garage or established collection.

2017 saw the 60th anniversary of the Lotus Elite and the Lotus 7, and with such great racing provenance as well as spine tingle inducing driving dynamics and real usable power, this Lotus Elite is one for the driver in all of us.
