An impeccably well-dressed blast from the past, launched in late 1951, the Type 300 was the largest and most magnificent Mercedes Benz, created post-World War II and was aimed squarely at captains-of-industry and heads-of-state.
Engineered with virtues of silence, flexibility and lightness of control, the 300 offered the perfect blend of traditional and modern motoring elements still relevant today.The later and improved Type 300 D was released in 1957, a four-door Grand Tourer equal in luxury and price but superior in performance to its main rival the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, boasting sporting underpinnings.
The 300 D featured a longer wheel base with improved chassis rigidity, Bosch mechanical fuel injection, an overhead camshaft for more immediate acceleration, an automatic Borg Warner transmission as standard and finned drum brakes for improved cooling. The revised car also now offered an impressive 160hp.
The 300 D available here sold new for £8,000 in 1959 and was 20 times more expensive than a standard Holden family sedan.
Ordered in black coachwork over red leather interior, this largely original and well preserved survivor also features its original Becker Brescia stereo, signature pillarless windows, unspoiled handcrafted timber trim across the dash and door cards- front to back, detailed VDO instrumentation with contrasted chrome switchgear as well as the original Red leather trim with an authentic patina.
Accompanying the car is a beautiful history file compiling registration documents, servicing receipts, and the original owners and service manuals so often lost with time as well as the original jack and tool kit. This sort of meticulous documentation is rarely seen and is indicative of the way in which this car has been cared for.
