1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series 4

There is something extraordinarily special about an Aston Martin from the 1960s.

Sir David Brown’s leadership at the time brought the marque back from the clutches of insolvency. He then went on to set the standard for the iconic brand’s performance image today with a series of classic sports cars bearing his initials.

Preceded by almost holy racing pedigree the Aston Martin DB4, unveiled at the 1958 Paris Auto Salon was ground-breaking for its time and today is regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever designed.

Offering an inimitable blend of brutish British engineering with an all new aluminium DOHC 3.7 litre straight-six and Italian crafted bodywork by Touring of Milan mounted over the famed Superleggera (super light) tubular frame, the DB4 achieved a powerful, lightweight and handsome elegance never seen before or since.

Four-wheel disc brakes, independent wishbone suspension with live rear axle, oil cooling, a chassis derived from aeronautical design, 240hp on tap with a 0-100kmh sprint devoured in just nine seconds and a beautifully short 98-inch wheelbase, the DB4 was and is held in the same high esteem as the 300 SL and 250 GTE.

Regarded by enthusiasts as the purist’s Aston, with its exquisite proportions and point and shoot dynamics, uniquely available here is an Aston Martin DB4 Series IV delivered new to Melbourne, Australia in September of 1962.

Finished in original Desert White over Red Connolly leather upholstery this rare factory right hand drive DB4 was optioned from new with air conditioning, overdrive transmission, Richmond seatbelts and Motorola radio.

Exceedingly original, this DB4 was treated to a specialist mechanical overhaul in 2003 repairing the steering rack, front and rear brake calipers, refurbishing the original water-pump, air conditioning compressor, clutch hydraulics, belts and pulleys at a cost of some $9,137.52 yet uniquely still carries many important factory features including the correct and irreplaceable front and rear chrome bumpers, chrome wire wheels, and complete, excellently well maintained interior trim.

Accompanying the car is an extensive history file including the leather instruction manual, original spare keys, original Richmond seat belt fitment instructions, a chronological ownership history that comically specifies “Previous owner would take taxi rather than drive in rain”, invoicing for the former major works, hide hammer, original jack and tool kit.

A true survivor, this original DB4 Series IV offers an undisputedly rare opportunity to own a slice of Aston Martin’s storied history from the beginning of what many consider to be the “Golden Years” of one of the best automakers of all time.
