1968 Volkswagen Beetle 1300

Automobiles of the 1940s and 50s around the globe were huge and trimmed to the teeth in chrome. Whilst most looked like spaceships and were stunning to look at, they cost a small fortune to own and maintain. Enter the Volkswagen Beetle.

“The Bug” was first introduced in 1938 and was originally designed by Ferdinand Porsche, however it was only after World War II, the small ‘people’s car’ shot to prominence.

After nearly 20 years after official post-war production, by 1968 improvements to Beetle included; all models now featured indicators higher mounted C-section bumpers, at the rear new larger taillamps were adopted and were able to accommodate reversing lamps, North American style vertical headlamps were now installed worldwide, and an exterior fuel flap was fitted eliminating the need to open the bonnet to refuel.

Among many updates to the Beetle, an all-new option 3-Speed Semi-Automatic gearbox was a available with torque converter and vacuum-operated clutch which can easily identified with a ‘VW Automatic’ Badge on the rear engine boot lid. In addition, all ’68 automatic models also featured improved semi-trailing-arm rear suspension which would eventually become an option on later models.

Its original engine remains and mechanically sound and the semi-automatic gearbox engages and selects gears without hesitation.

This fantastic little Beetle has just come out of a vast Volkswagen collection collated over approximately 20 years.

Preserved phenomenally well, the exterior presents beautifully, straight lines all around, the paint is unblemished and carries an even clear finish. The red leatherette interior trim is immaculate showing little to no signs of wear, plush carpets and colour matched white dashboard, along with its centrally mounted speedometer all presents in good order throughout.

Accompanied with its original jack and spare wheel, keys, original books and service booklet and a pile of documents and receipts detailing mechanical works completed on the vehicle over the past 10 years this little Beetle will satisfy even the discerning collector.
