After 40 years of production, today the Mini remains one of the most iconic classics ever built. It’s small and compact design thanks to Alex Issigonis was perfect for residing in the main cities of Europe.
It wasn’t until John Cooper saw the Morris Minis potential for more than just basic transport and with a little bit of tinkering to its BMC A-Series engine, one of which he was already quite familiar with had convinced the auto racing legend of the Mini’s competition potential, the result… the Mini Cooper, the car that offered an excellent package of size, price and performance. It wasn’t until 1965 where the Australian built MK1 Cooper S was produced, known for its high specification which featured a 1275cc 4-cylinder engine with twin-SU Carburettors, front disc brakes, close ratio gearbox, four-wheel independent suspension, twin fuel tanks, nerf bars on front and rear chrome bumpers, front quarter and wind up windows.
It was in 1967 with the release of the MK2, the Cooper S was most notably updated with flared wheel arches and an all new redesigned oval ‘Morris Cooper S’ badge on the bonnet.
On the showroom floor is an incredibly desirable 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S MK2 in Baltic Blue with a Crystal White roof and black vinyl interior still with all of its original engine, chassis and body numbers matching.
As per its original bill of sale, rarely accompanying these vehicles, this Mini Cooper S MK2 was sold on the 31st of July 1970 by U.K. Motors of Fortitude Valley, Queensland.
One of approximately 2,500 built here in Australia with very few original examples around today, this survivor benefits from an early restoration to exact specification. Beautifully presented with only slight patina in the paintwork this is by far one of the most original and meticulous restorations on a Mini Cooper we’ve seen.
Still with its original BMC steering wheel, original glass, gearshift knob and seats the interior is in immaculate condition. All dials and instruments remain operational and the original heater still remains.
Accompanying this Mini is a photographic log of its restoration completed in the 1990's, it's original bill of sale, original registration receipt, black/white photograph of the car after it was purchased in 1970, original vinyl wallet with books, receipts for service works and even it's original dealership key-ring.
Quick, quirky and cool this little Mini would be the perfect opportunity for the savvy collector looking for the genuine article with provenance.
Mechanically fantastic and ready to go this Mini Cooper S is not one to miss.
With overseas prices significantly higher, these Australian examples represent fantastic value and a solid investment.
