It’s difficult to start without stating the obvious that the Aston Martin DB5 is the most famous car in the world. After the release of James Bond: Goldfinger in 1964 every boy and his father had posters of the super-suave Sean Connery leant up next to the Silver Birch Saloon BMT 216A equipped with machine guns, revolving plates, bullet proof windscreen and a red button ejecting the passenger - (These optional extras are not available).
Today the DB5 is a collector's crown and jewel with just a small number of 1,021 examples built and an even smaller number remaining today, DB5 values internationally have soared to new heights due to its drop-dead gorgeous and timeless design, highly engaging drive and its world-class iconic stature.Providing brute performance and pure luxury, the DB5 sported an aluminum DOHC 4.0 litre straight six with three side draft SU Carburetors driven through a 5 Speed ZF manual transmission wrapped in a lightweight tubular framed body penned by famed Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and with 282HP on tap, the sprint from 0 to 100km/h is just 8 seconds with a top speed of 233km/h.
We are excited to bring to market this exceptionally restored 1964 Aston Martin DB5.
The car offered was originally sold in the UK through retailer C. Williams in January 1965 to a company named A & J Mucklow & Co. Ltd and delivered new in Dubonnet Rosso over Fawn Connolly leather.
We eventually place it in the north island of New Zealand where it found its way to a collection in Tauranga and was purchased by its most recent long-term custodian in 1988 where it was transported to Wellington.
After moving down to the South Island to Queenstown, Central Otago the DB5 was the subject of a masterful and zero expense spared ground-up restoration undertaken by AutoRestorations based in Christchurch, a restoration specialist internationally known to have won 16 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance awards over the past 30 years.
The restoration was completed over 4 years starting in 1998 and finishing in 2002 and was finished in two-tone Silver Birch with a Black roof over a beautiful Red Connolly leather interior much similar in design to Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson’s DB5, and in 2003 it was the winner in the Masters Class at the Intermarque Concours d’Elegance, Ellerslie.
Today this DB5 still retains its correct engine and chassis number matching its factory build sheet and Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate. Having been cared for, driven and regularly maintained this Aston Martin DB5 is one of the best we’ve seen and looks as if it was only restored yesterday.
It will be supplied with a toolkit, jack and spare wheel as well as an Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate, copies of the original factory build sheet and service record, photographs and receipts documenting the entire restoration.
