In the pursuit of creating a world-class Grand Tourer, starting in 1980 Alfa Romeo took their Giorgetto Guigaro styled four-cylinder Alfetta GT coupe and shoehorned a 2.5 litre V6 power unit with Bosch fuel injection into the engine bay.
They then ingeniously added a transaxle, De Dion rear suspension, and a Watt’s parallelogram linkage to the rear, wishbone suspension up front with increased negative camber to reduce understeer and front ventilated disc brakes with the rears inboard. An automotive engineer’s spiritual happy place, this front engined, rear-wheel drive pièce de résistance went on to win the European Touring Car Championship against Audi, BMW, and Jaguar for four successive seasons from 1982-1985 as well as the BTCC with Andy Rouse, then France, Italy, Australia… winning everywhere.
