The Jaguar E-Type is widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful cars ever built, and in the 1960s, it must have seemed out of this world.
Launched in 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, the E-Type became a global sensation with its sporting lines, aerodynamically shaped akin to a fighter plane, a top speed of 150 mph, and an affordable price tag.As a successor to the popular XK150, its development – led by Jaguar's Chief Engineer William Heynes and Aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer – pushed the technological boundaries, resulting in a masterpiece that seamlessly blended style with power to deliver exhilarating performance on the road and on the track.
Built around a monocoque tub forming the main structure, with a tubular space frame extending forward to support the legendary 3.8-litre triple SU carbureted, 265hp six-cylinder engine, the design drew inspiration from the highly successful D-Type race car.
Over the years, the Jaguar E-Type has attracted celebrity owners including Elton John, Frank Sinatra, and George Harrison, further elevating its status as one of the most collectible and coveted classic cars. Over the past 20 years, Classic Throttle Shop has been fortunate to handle the sale of many of Australia’s best examples, passing from enthusiasts to collectors alike.
None more so than this stunning example. Delivered new in November 1962 by Bryson’s of Melbourne to Mr John Pope of North Caulfield, this Series 1 Jaguar E-Type has covered just 14,316 miles in its 62 years.
Presented in its all-original Carmen Red over Biscuit interior, it remains thoroughly original in every detail, whilst being meticulously maintained throughout its life, with a documented history file, Jaguar Heritage Certificate, and servicing records.
Step inside the cabin, and you are easily transported back in time to that November day in 1962. Focusing on the finer details, the Smiths instrumentation, iconic toggle switch gear that never loses its novelty, smooth timber steering wheel, and leather console remain untouched and a pure time-warp.
However, that is not all in the nostalgic department, as it comes with its original 1960s tyres as part of the history package – not fitted to the car but along for the journey.
With just four owners from new, including some of Australia’s leading engineers and barristers, each enjoying several years in their collections, it underscores the treasure that this example represents.
This Jaguar E-Type is a testament to timeless automotive design and engineering prowess. Its allure transcends generations, earning it a revered and iconic status among classic car enthusiasts. With less than 20% of total E-Type production made available in RHD, its limited numbers contribute significantly to its appeal and high demand among collectors.
As one of the finest RHD examples available in the country, the value of this original and well-maintained Series 1 E-Type will provide not only driving enjoyment but also a sound investment for years to come.
