Volvo are known for building mid-level luxury SUV's today, but for most, at the mere mention of the brand, will cast their mind to the iconic 240 series that shuttled citizens and families to work, school and intercontinental for 20 years until they finished production in 1993.
Such a simple design that it is instantly recognizable. The 240 is a symbol of Volvo's pragmatism, a car whose very proportions show that practicality is the number one concern here. With, of course, a big emphasis on safety.
Over 20 years and many iterations of the powerplant, the B230 unit was the standout. It was known for its bulletproof reliability with some units travelling well over the 500,000 km mark when properly maintained. They were also a ‘non-interference' design, which meant the toothed timing belt failing would not cause engine damage.
A fuel-injected 2.3L 4 Cylinder SOHC, the B23 motor produces a modest 92 kw and 192Nm of torque. A rather zippy engine around town and very capable of holding highway speeds when travelling.
Nicknamed the “Mint Brick”, CTS is so excited to bring to market this absolutely one in a million example of a 1990 Volvo 240 GL Sedan with just 80,000kms travelled and was originally purchased new in April 1991 by Volvo Australia before finding its first and only private owner.
Coming out of long-term ownership since 1991, this vehicle has been absolutely cherished and even named by its previous owner, “Ori” after its registration plate ORI 662. This Volvo has never been driven in the rain, always garaged, driven every Sunday around Tamworth, NSW and fastidiously maintained over the past three decades.
The condition speaks for itself, it is completely original. The exterior paintwork is excellent, showing no signs of previous repairs with only expected minor wear.
The interior is perfect, the previous owner always kept sheep skin covers on the front seats and rarely had rear passengers, a dash mat and a rear blanket covering the parcel shelf to protect the interior plastics from Australia's harsh UV's. Everything is also fully functional including its original radio, speakers and air conditioning.
Under the bonnet looks as if it is new, with barely a speck of dust or oil throughout the engine bay and the boot interior trim and paintwork looks as if it was new.
After arriving at CTS, we subjected the car to a major service with marque specialists; including cam belt, tensioner, rear shock absorbers, oil-service, brake-fluid and a brand new set of Michelin tires. It is safe to say the car drives absolutely superb.
Accompanying the sale is its original set of logbooks and manuals, even including a logbook of every single fuel stop documented by the previous owner for the past 33 years. It also has its original factory clip-on headlight covers and dash mat.
Whilst many of these vehicles built, it is near impossible to find an example this well-kept at this mileage. They were a family car, a car to teach your kids to drive in, the reliable commuter and were heralded as the “safest car.... in the world".
If you are looking for a nostalgic commuter or something to run to your local cars and coffee meet, look no further, this Volvo impresses anyone who sees it.
