In March 2016, Porsche unveiled the limited-edition 911 R at the Geneva Motor Show. Powered by one of Stuttgart’s finest creations—the naturally aspirated, motorsport-derived 4.0-litre, 493 bhp engine from the 997 GT3 RS—paired with a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox, the R was a knockout.

What makes this car so special is its defiance of contemporary trends. In an era dominated by turbocharging and automatic transmissions—PDK, DSG, and DCT—the 911 R remains uncompromising, offering a return to pure, grassroots driving for the sheer pleasure of it.

To achieve its lightweight philosophy, Porsche removed the rear seats and infotainment system, replaced the PDK gearbox with a lighter six-speed manual, and incorporated advanced materials: carbon composite front wings, a magnesium roof, polycarbonate side and rear windows, a titanium exhaust system, and stripped-back sound insulation. The result is a kerb weight of just 1,370 kilograms.

This road-going masterpiece is 50 kilograms lighter than the GT3 RS and, remarkably, even faster, achieving 0–100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds—0.4 seconds quicker than its more track-focused sibling.
