Rapid and purposeful, the race-bred Jaguar Mark 2 saloon was introduced in 1959 and offered buyers "grace, pace, and space" as per Sir William Lyons’ instruction. Arguably the best saloon ever to carry the leaping cat, with elegant lines, a bold grille and plenty of British grunt, the Jaguar Mark 2 was one of the finest and fastest saloons available throughout the 1960’s, it even went racing, successfully.
Successor to the Mk1, the extensively revised Mk2 offered better all-round visibility courtesy of larger windows, wider wheel track improving roll-resistance and stability, the dashboard was redesigned with the speedometer and rev counter now located in front of the driver with six toggle switches and four minor gauges set across the centre too.
Mechanically, independent front suspension was by wishbone and coil springs, with a leaf-sprung live axle at the rear, Disc brakes all round were added and a choice of 2.4, 3.4 and the most engaging 3.8 litre XK engines were available and for a time. For a moment in history this was the fastest four-door car on the market.
This remarkable car, a 1961 Jaguar MKII has been lovingly owned by its current owner for the past 30 years, showcasing the dedication to its preservation. Originally it started out as a 2.4L Automatic variant, the engine has been upgraded with a 3.8L motor from another Mark 2 and paired with a smooth Toyota Supra transmission.
Rally headlights and a period-correct Halda Speedpilot Rally Timer, seamlessly built into the dash, add to its rally-ready charm, while the passenger mile marker tracker offers a nod to its adventurous spirit. In exceptional condition, this vehicle is a true testament to classic engineering and passion.
Presented in classically styled White over Tan upholstery with matching carpets and contrast timber veneer the superb attention to detail paid throughout the car is evident in the depth of finish to the paintwork, the tight panel fit (the doors open and close with perfect precision) with neatly fitted chrome trim, the correct Jaeger dash instrumentation and evenly weighted steering, pedal and gear feel that makes for an excellent drive.
Zero expense has been spared in caring for this MKII. The upgraded rally wheels are
fitted with a set of Goodyear Assurances that makes taking a corner at speed more trustworthy than wheels and tyres that are more period correct.
Eminently useable today, with excellent support provided by the many clubs and service specialists around Australia this exciting to drive and superbly upgraded Jaguar MKII is the reason to get out of bed at 6am on a Sunday morning for some classic motoring.
