As we head into the future of electrification, classic cars are quickly becoming the poster child for electric conversions.
Let’s use an original Land Rover as an example; they were used to build Australia’s roads, fight its fires, and toil on its farms for decades. But those that remain are more likely to be falling apart in a paddock or shed or sitting around in a collection, rarely driven.
Enter Melbourne-based manufacturer Jaunt, bringing the future to our beloved classics, making them highly usable, rather interesting, and modernised. Now, that’s not us here at CTS saying, “Out with the old and in with the new,” as there’s nothing that excites us more than internally combusting petrol to produce noise, speed, and power, but it’s certainly a great alternative for someone looking for the cool factor of driving a classic without the know-how and hassle of maintaining one.
Available on our floor is a brand-new, just-completed, restored and electric-converted 1964 Land Rover 2A SWB. Presented in a factory Land Rover colour, Arctic White, this vehicle has travelled only testing mileage of just 641 kilometres from new.
Built to an exceptionally high standard in the laboratory at Jaunt’s factory in Melbourne, Australia, Jaunt galvanised all the steel frames and chassis around the vehicle to prevent corrosion. All the panels were restored or replaced with NSOS parts.
The suspension was upgraded with ARB OME shock absorbers, and the brakes were upgraded with modern Defender discs and pads. It sits on 235/85R16 BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres.
The motor is a 55kWh battery pack, which powers a Hyper 9 electric motor and is quite uniquely mated to a four-speed full synchromesh Land Rover Series 3 gearbox, which utilises a traditional clutch engagement whilst in motion. The motor is programmed to produce a modest 90kW of power and 230Nm of torque, with an approximate battery range of 250 kilometres.
The Jaunt Land Rover also features low range, as well as 2WD and 4WD selection, and has power-assisted steering.
Inside the cabin, there is LED lighting, USB and 12V connectivity, as well as an internal fridge—all of which can be powered by the house battery without the vehicle being on via “Camp Mode” for up to 1,000 hours.
Jaunt has custom-engineered an ADR 2025-compliant seatbelt mounting system with three-point inertia belts. It is also important to note that this vehicle has already been engineered to be registered in QLD and NSW. It can also be engineered by Jaunt to be registered in VIC or other states.
Join the rEVolution of classic vehicle electrification with this brand-new build and highly engaging electric classic. Quite capable both off-road and extremely capable around town, this Landy would be the perfect beach town runabout.
