Racing driver John Coombs enjoyed considerable racing success in his storied career, including a win in a minor Formula 1 race before transferring to race team ownership and running his Guildford-based Jaguar dealership.

With his engineering background, Coombs prepared and entered race cars under his own name for other drivers, including Graham Hill, Roy Salvadori, Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren.

The Coombs name will be forever be linked with Jaguars racing heritage, his superbly prepared Mark 1 and Mark 2 saloons dominated British saloon car racing throughout the late 50s and early 60s.

He and his engineering team were also commissioned by Jaguar to build 33 factory Coombs racing Mark 2’s that are highly prized today for astronomical prices that has inspired enthusiasts to commission recreations with the Coombs racing likeness.

The car offered here is a late 1968 Jaguar Mark 2 that in 2003 was re-built to Coombs racing specification by classic Jaguar specialists Ian Cummins and Graeme Lord Engineering, NSW under the guidance of Coombs racing engineer, Ken Bell based in the U.K.

The standardised Coombs conversion involves rebuilding the engine with 9:1 compression, a balanced crankshaft, lightened flywheel and gas flowed head, free flowing exhaust, carburettor air intake with polished air spreader and adjustable shock absorbers.

Further specialist items this cars particular conversion includes, are a period 4.2L Jaguar E-Type engine and 5 speed Getrag 260 gearbox with overdrive, Scorcher/Petronix Ignition, Power-Lite Starter Motor, uprated electronic fuel pump, and pressure regulator, 2 x 2 inch HD8 carburettors with alloy trumpets from Ken Bell, reinforced rear spring plates, alloy radiator and electric cooling fan, uprated sway bar, Koni dampers front and rear, Goodridge steel braided brake lines, EZ power steering, stainless steel exhaust system, Mini-Lite Knock off alloy wheels, louvered bonnet and true to Coombs form- leather Restall bucket seats.

On the road the car is very impressive. Taut and effortlessly quick, mechanically this classic racing saloon is clearly very well sorted. A lot of time and money was spent to get the upmost out of this surprisingly sporting saloon package.

Most enthusiasts have a close bond with a make because of a memory that sparked their passion. For a lot of Jaguar enthusiasts, it was the Coombs Mk 2 and its towering racing success.

Excellently prepared with influence from the original racing team, available with invoices for all major works and ready to breathe life into your weekend, this Jaguar Mk 2 Coombs Recreation is ready to drive off the showroom floor.
