The most historically significant of all Porsche models is undoubtedly the 911.
Introduced in 1963, it would be the mainstay of Porsche production for 30 years, retaining the same basic construction, albeit constantly modified and uprated.
With a layout broadly similar to the 356, early 911’s had a steel platform chassis with springing by torsion bars, MacPherson front struts and rear trailing arms, all mated to a glorious flat-6 air-cooled engine and a 5-speed manual transmission, as first seen on the Type 904.
A lengthened wheelbase introduced in 1969 greatly improved the 911's handling, and then in 1970 the engine underwent the first of many enlargements- to 2.2 litres producing 125 horsepower, a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 10 seconds, with 4-wheel disc brakes as standard.
Tenacious adhesion, responsive steering, very good flexibility, superb brakes, meticulous finish and a solid, unburstable feel were just some of the virtues praised by Motor Magazine in its test of a 911 in 1973.
Now 50 years later, these early small bumper 911s continue to grow in popularity among collectors, prized for the purity of their driving experience as much as their iconic shape.
Offered here is a very desirable, 1970 Porsche 911 T sold new through Porsche Cars, Melbourne in January of the same year optioned with Sportomatic transmission, sunroof, graduated windscreen tint and rear windscreen wiper and today presents in the desirable combination of period correct Bahia Red over Black trim.
With absolutely impeccable Porsche service history early on within its life catalogued within its original and often lost with time books, in the early 1990’s the car was subject to a detailed engine rebuild with classic Porsche specialists based in Melbourne and then in 2010 the Sportomatic transmission was replaced with a period correct 5 speed manual.
A common change but as these rare transmissions become ever collectable, importantly the original Sportomatic still accompanies this car.
Benefitting from a recent re-trim, the interior carpets, switch gear, artfully tailored bucket seats and original gauges are in pristine condition. The body boasts tidy refreshed paintwork as well with original glass all round and original Fuchs alloys still fitted.
The extensive accompanying documentation still holds the original delivery certificate and highlights the Porsche service history and there are also receipts for the no expense spared maintenance from new.
A truly incredible car, all this rare, original right hand drive and Australian delivered 911 T shares with other classics is the road.
A great opportunity to own a highly collectible Porsche, and seldom offered for sale this 911 T won’t be available for long as international values continue to climb and appetites increase to experience that totally engaging classic 911 drive.
