Designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche as a means of mass transportation for a growing and heavily industrialised nation in the mid-1930s, the Volkswagen Beetle survived 64 years of production, enjoying silver screen stardom and phenomenal sales records in the process.
Development of the Beetle was continuous, the original 1100cc model giving way to 1300 and 1500 versions in the mid-1960s and early 70’s by which time it also offered, MacPherson struts, double-jointed back axle and front disc brakes lending to far-better performance and a much more user-friendly drive.Offered here is this faithfully maintained and Australian delivered 1970 VW 1500 Beetle in its original groovy combination of Signal Orange over Saddle Basketweave vinyl trim.
Sold new by VW Motors, Lismore in October of 1970, this exquisitely well-maintained Beetle is a blast to drive with its original 1500cc engine that brought the Bug lightyears forward in terms of usable performance. Each and every stint behind the chrome horn ringed steering wheel of this car is an event.
A time capsule in every sense of the phrase, the famed utilitarian cabin has been expertly re-trimmed to factory specification using all correct materials like the Basketweave seat vinyls with coconut fibre internals, Wolfsburg seat belts, Charcoal crush pile carpets, Black plastic switch gear and the artfully fitted perforated vinyl roof liner all sourced from classic VW restoration specialists CIP, USA.
The fresh and original feeling inside is as though the car rolled off the showroom floor yesterday, something that never loses its novelty and the integrated speedo and fuel gauge found only on these later models is a cool quirk too.
This car has also been meticulously serviced since new, the most recent including an oil and filter change with new fuel hoses and is in excellent running order. Acceleration is agile, the steering is quick and the front disc brakes pull the car up with ease.
Accompanying the car is its original and rarely seen service record with delivery information, ownership history and service intervals. There’s also receipts for all major works, the original instruction manual and “Authorised Service Station” booklet all bound within the vinyl VW wallet the car was sold new with.
The combination of simple and bulletproof engineering, coupled with equally simple maintenance, a drive that never fails to put a smile on your face and character that always makes you do a double take this 1970 VW Beetle 1500 is one to own and enjoy.
A viewing is an absolute must of this tastefully and meticulously kept classic icon.
