Atop the list of all-time great classic sports cars is the MG B roadster.
A car designed to appeal to the hearts and wallets of drivers the world over the B was also MG’s most performance-oriented model at the time.
Launched at the 1962 London Motor Show, the most desirable and collectable of its series Mk1 MG B features a dependable 1.8 litre B-series engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox that loves to weave through the city weekend roads with creature comforts like wind-up windows, generously cushioned bucket-seats, a neat folding convertible top and of course, overdrive.
Like its predecessors, the MGB enjoyed a long and successful racing career. Under the direction of BMC Competitions Manager Stuart Turner, works-entered Bs appeared in a variety of endurance races and rallies, where its durability overcame any speed deficiencies.
Mostly using the lighter roadster shell equipped with a hardtop, bumpers were removed, perspex headlight covers fitted and additional ducts added to the grille to increase cold air flow into the engine bay. Many of the items used by Abingdon were made available to privateers wishing to build a ‘works replica’, including upgrades to the engine, gearbox and chassis.
Racing highlights included a class win at Le Mans in 1963, first in the GT Category at the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, 1966 Targa Florio and both the 1966 and 1967 editions of the Spa 1000-kilometres. Outright wins included the Guards 1000 race held at Brands Hatch in 1965 and the 84-hour Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring the following year. MGBs have remained hugely popular as an affordable means of going racing ever since and they remain competitive in historic events the world over.
