2016 Audi RS6 Avant

The world's fastest station wagon. While that seems like a funny thing to brag about, Audi has form in the fast five-door field, often choosing to release high-performance variants in practical Avant form. This new RS6 Performance is the brand's fastest family car yet, one that rivals supercars for straight-line performance.

Whilst Audi’s expertise with hot estates – or station wagons as like to say – is superior to all in the luxury segment, the RS story started many years ago with a collaboration with another well-known powerhouse: PORSCHE

The RS 2, based on the Audi 80 Avant, was a Porsche modified version of their 2.2ltr inline, five cylinder DOHC, 20v Turbo. Built at the Porsche Rossle-Bau plant, Porsche added a larger turbocharger, heavy duty intercooler, high-flow fuel injectors, camshaft, induction system, low-pressure exhaust and ECU. Then it got to work on the suspension and braking system, with high-performance components from their 968 Clubsport program, finishing it off with a Recaro Interior, Sports Steering Wheel, a set of Cup wheels and teardrop mirrors.

The result was nothing short of astonishing – a sub five-second family estate from 0-100 and quicker off the line to 50kms/h than a McLaren F1. The Audi RS die was cast.

Since then, the four-ring’s have produced countless expressions of the “Rennsport” models, however always tipping the hat to the original RS2 in Avant form by creating their flagship as a wagon – the iron fist, velvet glove Audi RS6.

With three generations spanning 20 years, the brand’s Hallo model has allowed them to push the limits of the possible and showcase new technology with performance whilst keeping to their original ideal.
